The Myford is a plain bearing 7" swing lathe, although it has a gap bed which extends its capacity, and the Boxford, depending on model is 9" or 10" swing, and has taper roller bearings. Myfords and their accessories, at least in the UK fetch a premium price over and above a Boxford.

Myford and Excell Milling Machines

Unusually well-made for a relatively inexpensive machine, the Myford VMB was manufactured in Taiwan by the Buffalo Machinery Co. Ltd. and sold in the UK by not only Myford, but also by the Excel Machinery Co. as their " Model 600 ". In Taiwan, the Model was listed as the " CNC 600 " - but this had absolutely nothing to do with computer control.

This may be a big advantage. The ML7 had twin square iron ways with a gap. The ML10 first hit the street about 1968. The spindle was set directly into iron bores like some older 9 in south bends. It's ok but your speed limited. Shortly afterward they switched to to tapered roller bearings. The Myford is an awsome lathe but it's a cheap date.

I made up a couple of pieces of 2 x 4 with feet to bolt my Myford lathe too with some all thread and nuts and have used them several times. Makes rigging and manually carrying it easy. Two people can lift it but I normally try to use three to make it easy - two at the headstock end, one on the tailstock end - and it can be moved fully assembled.
